During Timbuktu Flame of Peace on 27 March 1996, General Henny van der Graaf (of the United Nations) held the torch beside President Alpha Oumar KONARE of Mali and President Jimmy RAWLINGS of Ghana who was then the Chairman of the regional grouping ECOWAS.
