Raising local and national awareness of the destabilising effects of small arms and light weapons is at the heart of a successful disarmament programme. From the outset of the programme in 2000 until its closure in 2006, EU ASAC implemented a wide range of activities and cooperated with a broad spectrum of organisations in an effort to encourage awareness of the illegality of small arms. These activities can be broadly categorised as follows:
